Yeah! Yesterday i’ve got brand new Creative ZEN player with brand new Creative ZEN Auyrvana headphones. I’m really happy with them. Ok, now to the details
I was a little afraid, that I won’t be able to copy songs to ZEN because it doesn’t support mass-storage protocol common for other players and pendrives. It supports MTP protocol instead, used by some mp3 players mostly Creative ones. When I connected the player it wasn’t discovered by ubuntu. Amarok and rhythmbox didn’t recognized it at all. After some searching I found information that I have to install newest libmtp (library that supports mtp). The current version is 0.2.5, and it was easy to compile. Next I needed to download mtpfs, a fuse filesystem that supports mtp devices. And voila, I can mount my ZEN without a problem with:
After almost a year or more (actually i don’t remember for how long i’ve been using it) i changed my main torrent app. I used to use MLDonkey, but some time ago it started to get worse, probably mainly due to a fact that it doesn’t support encrypted connections and DHT, and most other BT client require it by default. It caused the download speeds to drop below acceptable levels (i couldn’t download 28gb of mythbuster show in over 230 days!). After a quick look i decided to try deluge (www.deluge-torrent.org) and I’m quite satisfied. It looks a lot like Azureus (but it’s a lot faster and less resource hungry because it was written in python). What is interesting it has a lot of useful plugins (like i.e. web frontend so i can add torrents to deluge running on a mythbuntu server straight from my laptop). I wasn’t thinking too long, and transfered all my current downloads from MlDonkey to Deluge. For now everything seems fine, although I lost about 30% of downloaded files.
Final thought: if you need a good BT client than you should definetely give it a try.
No dobra, wreszcie kupiłem przyzwoity telewizor. Po dość długim szukaniu i czytaniu informacji na różnych forach o tematyce wideo, hd itp zdecydowałem się na telewizor plazmowy Samsunga z serii C91. I musze powiedzieć, że jestem nim pozytywnie zaskoczony. Jakość na zwykłej telewizji po założeniu przyzwoitej wtyczki nakręcanej na kabel i w telewizorze filtrze szumów jest całkiem znośna. Jakość przy oglądaniu z DVD z włączonym upscalingiem do 720p (na Panasonicu S53) jest bardzo dobra. Natomiast jakość w HD, poprostu powala z nóg. Oglądam z odległości gdzieś ok 3m i muszę przyznać, że naprawde przy sygnale HD, ma się wrażenie, że obraz wygląda jak naturalny, aż chce się go dotknąć. Choć może na moje pierwsze wrażenie miało też wpływ to, że oglądalem Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2007 (YouTube)…;-) Naprawde jakość w HD jest powalająca…Niestety powalające są też wymagania sprzętowe dla mojego serwera multimedialnego, na którym chodzi od wczoraj Mythbuntu 7.10 (wcześniej Ubuntu Feisty 7.04). Serwerek ma 768mb ramu i mobilnego Athlona chodzącego na 2100Mhz z szyną 166Mhz. Przy takim ustawieniu sygnał HD720p z dżwiękiem 5.1 ma tendencje do lekkiego przycinania się…Procek cały czas ponad 90% a pamięci też może z 50mb wolne…Chyba będę musiał pomajstrować coś z woltażem procesora i pamięci i spróbować jeszcze nieco podkręcić maszyne
Myśl przewodnia: Jeśli chcecie miec płaski TV, żeby oglądać telewizje SD, DVD i HD720p, i nie wydać majątku to kupcie plazmę Samsunga (są na Allegro od 3000-3500PLN).

ok, wreszcie się to stało…po kilku latach używania gentoo na moim serwerku multimedialnym z mythtv na pokładzie (który pełnił też role serwera www, mysql, mldonkey oraz banku danych) postanowilem, że przyszedł czas na zmiany. serwerek od kilku lat dzialal sobie spokojnie i spelnial swoje zadanie. w zeszlym tygodniu pobrałem obraz feistiego beta (wersja alternate), wypalilem i zacząłem zabawę w serwerku jest zainstalowana karta nvidii fx5600 z wyjsciem tv do którego jest podlączony telewizor, monitora nie ma w ogóle. miałem pewne obawy czy będę w stanie przeprowadzić instalację korzystając jedynie z telewizora, ale okazało się to całkowicie bezproblemowe (jedyny mankament to fakt, że w trybie tekstowym obraz jest czarno-biały). po około pól godzinie system był zainstalowany. po restarcie zainstalowałem szybciutko openssh i przeniosłem się z robotą na laptopa, z którego już mogłem podłączyć się zdalnie do serwerka.
Przy wykonywaniu instalacji mythtv korzystałem z helpu na ubuntu.com (np. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV_Edgy_Backend_Frontend). Karta TV (Hauppauge PVR150) zaczeła działać od razu bo w Feistym są włączone drivery do niej.
Kolejne operacje (tzn. np instalacja apache, samby, phpmyadmin itd.) ograniczała się do korzystania z apt-get install.
Drobne kłopoty napotkałem przy instalacji lirca, niestety w paczkach oferowanych przez Feistiego nie mogłem odnaleźć drivera do mojego pilota czyli PCMAK. Na szczęście bezproblemowo poszła instalacja ze źródeł pobranych z www.lirc.org. Kolejne drobne utrudnienie związane było z instalacją automatycznej obsługi programu tv w mythtv. Niestety xmltv, który jest używany przez mythtv, nie obsługuje pobierania programu dla polski. Na szczęście można skorzystać z programu TVxb, który uruchamia się pod wine (bardzo fajna instrukcja jest tutaj: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/TVxb).
Ogólnie jestem na 100% zadowolony ze zmiany. Wszystko działa super, serwerek jest może nieco bardziej przymulony, ale związane jest to z większą liczbą programów i usług chodzących w tle - zaczyna niestety brakować nieco ramu. Będę musiał się chyba rozejrzeć na allegro za jakąś 256 lub 512.
Reasumując, gentoo będę zawsze ciepło wspominał, przyszedł jednak czas na to by iść do przodu.
Ostatnio natrafiłem na obraz płyty z rozszerzeniem *.daa. Po krótkim googlaniu okazało się, że jest to natywny format jakiegoś głupiego windowsowego programu, który oczywiście jest obsługiwany tylko i wyłącznie przez ten właśnie program (tj. PowerIso). Ale od czego jest wine? Nastawiony optymistycznie, gdyż ostatnio wine częściej działa, niż nie działa, pobrałem PowerIso i zainstalowałem go używając wine. Okazało się, że programik poza wersją z gui, posiada też wersję działającą z linii poleceń: piso.exe. W pierwszej chwili piso nie chciało działać raportując brak biblioteki emeswćirt (msvcirt.dll). Po ściągnięciu biblioteki z dll-files.com i zapisaniu jej do katalogu programu, wszystko zaczęło śmigać. Jeszcze tylko chwilę męczyłem się ze składnią:
Have you ever heard of MacOSX Dashboard and dreamt of having it in Ubuntu? In case you don’t know what Dashboard is - it’s a utlity that lets you place useful small widgets (like calendar or calculator) on a layer “above” your desktop - to make them visible you just have to move a mouse cursor to the corner. Widgets in Dashboard are similar to those of Superkaramba of gDesklets.
Now, when everyone knows what Dashboard is, let me introduce you to..TADAAAA…..Screenlets (and beryl-widget plugin).
To install screenlets add these repositories to /etc/apt/sources.list deb http://hendrik.kaju.pri.ee/ubuntu edgy screenlets
deb-src http://hendrik.kaju.pri.ee/ubuntu edgy screenlets
and run sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install screenlets
A very nice app to manage screenlets is screenletsd-tray, which locates itself in (guess where…) tray
And don’t forget to enable widget plugin in beryl because without that screenlets are just half of fun…They just sit on the desktop and it’s impossible to hide them on a “dashboard” layer (which doesn’t exist)

After reading announcement for Herd 3 of Feisty Fawn, I decided to give Tracker (mentioned in the changelog) a shot. For those who don’t know Tracker is a lightweight Beagle. I used to have a lot of problems with Beagle - don’t get me wrong, it was doing it’s job pretty well, but it was soooo hungry for cpu time and memory. Sometimes top reported that beagle was using 400mb of my ram!!! The other problem was the almost constant fan activity in my laptop caused by beagle - it was really getting on my nerves. Basically, that is why I’d decided to try Tracker…
and I must say I’m not disappointed Tracker is light, check the screenshot below:
According to the authors it’s fast - I didn’t have the opportunity to benchmark it, but the authors claim that it can index 100 files per second…
And it also can integrate nicely with Deskbar:
Ok. so how can you get it? If your using Edgy just add this repository to your sources.list :
deb http://debs.michaelbiebl.de/ edgy main
and install tracker and additional packages (like i.e. deskbar integration)

By default Tracker will index only Home directory, to add more directories to index, you have to edit config file ~/.Tracker/tracker.cfg gedit ~/.Tracker/tracker.cfg
and add a directory to WatchDirectoryRoots (i.e. to add /media/my_documents directory you have to add:
WatchDirectoryRoots=/home/YOURUSER;/media/my_documents/
Another useful option, especially for laptop users is Throttle. The higher the value, the lower the indexing speed (read the quieter laptop fan :-). I have throttle set to 15 and I think it’s fine.
